Cartmel makes very little effort to impress you, which is precisely why a weekend here works so well. The priory has stood since the twelfth century; the racecourse sits in the middle of the village; the pudding is famous and deserves to be.
Stay on the edge of the village so you can walk to dinner. Spend Saturday morning on Hampsfell with the estuary opening below you, and the afternoon doing nothing at all.
