Signature Stays began with a simple frustration: the Lake District has some of the most extraordinary houses in Britain, and almost no one was presenting them properly.
We grew up here, or came here and never quite left. Between us we have run country houses, cooked in Cumbrian kitchens, guided on the fells and spent an unreasonable number of mornings in cold water.
What we kept noticing was the gap. Remarkable homes listed on mass-market sites between a caravan and a city flat. Owners who had spent years on a house handed a photographer with twenty minutes. Guests arriving to a key safe and a leaflet.
So we built the thing we wanted to exist: a small collection, presented like the places they are, looked after by people who live down the road.
We don't want every property in the Lake District. We want the right ones.
Deliberately selective
Every home has to have something.
Architecture, interiors, position, views, history — or simply an extraordinary feeling when you walk through the door. If we can't say what makes a house remarkable in one sentence, we don't take it on.
That is why the collection is small, and why it will stay that way. It also means that when we suggest somewhere, we mean it.
