Two days is not long. Spent properly, it is entirely enough — a lake at dawn, a fell in the afternoon and a table worth crossing a county for.
The mistake most visitors make in two days is to drive. The Lake District rewards the opposite instinct: pick one valley, park the car, and let the days get slower rather than fuller.
Arrive on Friday afternoon and do nothing more ambitious than a walk to the water and dinner at the house. The drive north is long enough; the fells will still be there in the morning.
Saturday belongs to one good walk. Orrest Head takes half an hour and gives you the whole lake; Loughrigg takes two and gives you the whole district. Take a flask, take the long way back, and be home by four so the afternoon still feels like a holiday.
Saturday evening is the one to plan properly. The Lakes now hold two of the most interesting kitchens in the north of England, and both take bookings months ahead. Our concierge team can usually find a way in at shorter notice.
Sunday is for water. Swim from a jetty, hire a launch for an hour, or simply sit with coffee and watch the light shift down the lake. Leave later than you meant to.
